The original design dated 1504, is located on sheet 33r of the Atlantic Codex, at the ” Biblioteca Ambrosiana ” in Milan.
The design, a stunning drawing, shows the entire sequence of operation of a weapon . The big mouth and the shape of the mortar “BOMBARDA” is able to shoot big bullets, exploding in the air, that release a large number of smaller bombs that spread in a wide area on the battlefield and explode again is turn into smaller splinters, are able to defeat a large number of enemies.
The operation is similar to today’s cluster bombs .
